► (n. 1937) Político británico. Líder del Partido Socialdemócrata y Laborista (SDLP, católico moderado) en 1979-2001. En 1998 intervino en el acuerdo de paz de Stormont para Irlanda del Norte. Recibió el premio Nobel de la Paz en 1998.

Líder del Partido Laborista y Social Demócrata (SDLP) en Irlanda del Norte entre 1979 y 2001; ganador, junto a David Trimble, del Premio Nobel de la Paz en 1998. Maestro de escuela, se convirtió en un dirigente católico del movimiento por los derechos civiles en Irlanda del Norte en la década de 1960. Fue elegido a los Parlamentos de Irlanda del Norte (1969), Europa (1979) y Gran Bretaña (1983). De tendencia moderada, condenó el uso de la violencia por el Ejército Repúblicano Irlandés (IRA). A fines de la década de 1980, intentó convencer al IRA de que abandonara la lucha armada en contra de Gran Bretaña y participara en la política democrática. Arriesgó su seguridad personal participando en conversaciones, a veces secretas, con líderes del Sinn Féin, el ala política del IRA, y jugó un importante papel en la negociación del acuerdo del Viernes Santo, consenso de paz multipartidario alcanzado entre unionistas y nacionalistas en abril de 1998. Elegido a la nueva Asamblea de Irlanda del Norte en junio, renunció dos años más tarde por problemas de salud.
